Hörups backe

Anyone who has ever visited the region of Österlen in southern Sweden will know what an amazing landscape this is, not least the soft, rolling fields.

Sometimes, from a high point, you can see forever. Hörups Backe is such a place. It gives you a sweeping view of the area. You can glimpse the town of Ystad in one direction, Stenshuf[DS1] vud National Park in another, and you can see the sea and the town of Borgholm. It is a wonderful place to experience the changing seasons. The bright yellow glow of rapeseed flowers in spring, the verdant green of summer, the rich harvest of fall and the white fields of winter.

In the past, there was a piggery here. The four houses extend along on the ridge as the piggery did before, forming a line on the hill. Whitewashed walls connect the houses and set them apart, providing a sense of independence and privacy as well as a sheltered nook on windy days.

The walls tap into the characteristic vernacular architecture of Österlen, with oblong houses built of whitewashed brick with steep pitched roofs, often constructed as farmsteads with outbuildings, barns and walls.

Architectural heritage played a key role in the design of the houses. Rugged and durable, built of brick and timber. Genuine craftsmanship. The buildings are largely free from the materials that plague most contemporary construction, such as square metre after square metre of plaster or  various types of plastic.

Each house has a footprint of 140 square metres. The living space can be expanded by 60 square metres by simply incorporating the attic space. The interiors have an open, airy floor plan with large glass panes to create a close connection with the surrounding landscape and endless views.
